Region: Key Canberra support service to shut doors due to lack of funding, warns of service gap
Founded in 1989, Community Options has spent decades providing specialised and flexible care, including for its 139 current clients across its three programs.
Ever since their launch, they’ve been providing intensive case management, advocacy and practical assistance, such as in-home support for Canberrans undergoing palliative care and those who don’t meet NDIS eligibility standards.
He told Region that their model meant they worked directly with providers, purchasing services from them that clients could access as needed (rather than receiving a set program).
“Every funding system has an eligibility criteria, and if you don’t meet that criteria, you don’t get services. Not every Canberran that is seeking services fits in the box.
“What Community Options [did was push] the boundaries of the box … That’s not happening in the funding system anymore.”
